The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, joins the nation in mourning the passing of Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, an illustrious alumna and former First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, who died at age 76.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was a proud alumna of KNUST, where she studied Art and Design specialising in Textiles in the 1970s. During her time on campus, she was known for her vibrant intellect and passion for social justice, qualities that would later define her national influence.
Her education at KNUST profoundly shaped her lifelong advocacy for women’s empowerment, community development, and the advancement of Ghanaian culture.
As First Lady from 1981 to 2001, she founded the 31st December Women’s Movement, one of the most impactful social development initiatives in Ghana’s history, empowering countless women through education, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement.
Beyond politics, Nana Konadu championed the inclusion of Ghanaian art, craft, and textiles in global conversations about identity and culture, a testament to her artistic roots nurtured at the College of Art and Built Environment.
