The Directorate of Student Affairs at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has outlined enhanced security, transport and welfare measures ahead of the arrival of fresh students for the new academic year.
The measures were discussed at a stakeholder coordination meeting chaired by the Director of Student Affairs, Professor Marian Asantewah Nkansah, and attended by representatives of campus security, the Ghana Police Service, transport operators, KNUST-owned hostels, senior tutors, the Committee of Hall Administrators (CoHA), student leadership and other support units.
“Our focus is to ensure that every fresher arrives on campus safely and is properly guided through the reporting process,” Professor Nkansah said.
She said the University had strengthened transport and traffic management arrangements, including the deployment of university buses and approved shuttle services, to reduce congestion during peak reporting periods.
Stakeholders cautioned against the use of unapproved transport services, urging students and parents to rely only on authorised KNUST-embossed vehicles to avoid exploitation and security risks. They said traffic marshals would be stationed at critical junctions to manage flow and prevent gridlock.
The Directorate, working with campus security, the police, the fire service and emergency response teams, will deploy personnel at strategic entry and exit points, traditional halls and other high-traffic areas. Cadet officers and trained volunteers will support crowd control, surveillance and guidance, while patrols will be intensified to deter unauthorised activities.
Professor Nkansah stressed the importance of accurate and timely information, noting that the University’s official website and digital platforms would remain the primary sources for verified updates on reporting schedules, orientation activities, transport arrangements and accommodation procedures.
“We are urging students and parents to disregard unofficial messages and rely on communications issued by KNUST through approved channels,” she said.
She said the Directorate would continue to monitor the reporting exercise and work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a safe and orderly start to the academic year.
