The University Health Services (UHS) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST) has launched a dedicated home healthcare service vehicle to expand medical care beyond the hospital and into patients’ homes.
The vehicle, officially dedicated on Feb. 11, 2026, is expected to strengthen follow-up care for elderly patients, retirees, individuals living with chronic conditions and those recovering from acute illnesses.
University officials said the initiative reflects a shift toward patient-centred and community-based healthcare delivery.
The van will support follow-up care for chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, post-discharge monitoring, medication supervision, wound care, rehabilitation visits, geriatric and palliative care services, as well as preventive health outreach and screenings.
Health administrators say the move is aimed at improving continuity of care, reducing avoidable hospital readmissions and strengthening trust between the university community and its health system.
The vehicle is equipped to transport medical personnel and portable medical equipment to ensure safe and professional home visits.
Officials noted that the service will particularly benefit mobility-limited patients, high-risk individuals requiring close monitoring, and university staff and retirees who need structured home-based follow-up.
The dedication ceremony was led by the University Chaplain, Rev. Joseph W. Acheampong, and attended by the Director of University Health Services, Dr. Nana Kwame Ayisi-Boateng; the Matron, Mrs. Diana Appiah; Dr. Phyllis Tawiah, Geriatrician and Chairperson of the UHS Geriatrics, Palliative and Home Visit Committee; Dr. Nana Akua Abruquah, Family Physician and committee member; Mr. Asante, Chief Transport Officer of UHS; Mr. Sammed Duah, Hospital Accountant; and Mr. Akwasi Ohene-Adjei, UHS Administrator.
With the vehicle now operational, UHS officials said structured domiciliary visit schedules will be rolled out, alongside monitoring systems to track impact and ensure accountability.
