The COVID-19 coordinating Team established by the Vice Chancellor, Kwesi Obiri-Danso and the Executive Management Committee of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi has launched a massive public education campaign. The initiative is meant to take public education on the novel coronavirus to the doorsteps of all members of the University Community, Kumasi Metropolis and the entire nation.
The team was set up soon after the outbreak of the virus in Ghana which led to the closure of all public educational institutions including KNUST. The committee which is chaired by the Director of University Health Services and representatives from College of Health Sciences, KCCR, School of Public Health, Office of the Dean of students and the University Relations has the following terms of reference: monitor and coordinate developments regarding the pandemic on campus for effective management, facilitate the screening of staff and students who might have travelled outside the country since the outbreak of the virus, establish protocols for social distancing, self-quarantine and to screen and identify cases, establish isolation centre/facility and operationalise it, consider any other matter that in the view of the committee will lead to effective management of the disease, among others.
The committee has observed developments on the pandemic in Ghana over the past one month and has decided to engage members of the University Community and the general public in a more comprehensive manner in order to curb the spread of the virus.
Public education messages have thus been developed in written and oral forms and will be delivered to the general public via PA systems, radio, and TV using both English and local languages. The team believes that once adequate education is made available to all citizenry in their respective languages, they would be well informed to do what is right. The public education campaign comes under the phrase; Stay Smart, Be Alive.
