The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi Career Services Centre has held a training session on CV writing and interview skills for final-year Computer Science, Geological Engineering and Geomatic Engineering students, as part of efforts to prepare them for the transition from academia into the job market.
The Director of the Career Services Centre, Mrs Selina Doe Angmor, said the session was aimed at equipping students with practical skills to develop strong and effective curricula vitae as they prepare to enter the workforce.
“It is to impact in the students, knowledge about what goes into a good or a fabulous CV. This is because they are transitioning into the workforce, they will have to present CVs for opportunities,” she said.
Mrs Angmor said the relevance of CV writing extends beyond job applications, noting that students also require CVs when pursuing further studies and scholarship opportunities.
“Even beyond CVs for work, sometimes when you need to advance your studies, when you need scholarships, you are required to present your CV,” she said.
On interview preparation, she said interviews remain a key requirement for many industry opportunities and explained that the centre seeks to guide students on how to present themselves effectively.
“For a lot of opportunities in industry, you would have to be interviewed. And we want to teach them how to present themselves such that they are competitive,” she said.
Mrs Angmor said the training activities are being supported by the European Union and the United Nations, adding that feedback from participant satisfaction surveys would help assess the impact of the session and improve future programmes.
“This will also allow us to be able to fine-tune subsequent interventions for them,” she said.
She said the training also forms part of preparations for the university’s upcoming career fair, aimed at ensuring meaningful engagement between students and potential employers.
“During the career fair we bring a lot of employers or industry players here to interact with the students. So, we need to prepare them so that they are well positioned for those interactions with the employers,” she added.
The session ended with a question-and-answer segment that allowed students to seek clarification and deepen their understanding of CV writing and interview skills.
