The Institute of Distance Learning has admitted 2,288 fresh students for its eight learning centres for the 2010/2011 Academic year. This was disclosed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor William Otoo Ellis at this year's matriculation ceremony held for the Southern Sector at the Institute of Local Government Studies, Madina, Accra. The number is made up of 1,716 postgraduate and 572 undergraduate students. He congratulated the fresh students on behalf of the University for making the best strategic decisions in their lives.
According to him the Commonwealth Executive Masters in Business Administration (CEMBA) and the Commonwealth Executive Masters in Public Administration (CEMPA) continue to be the flagship programmes at the postgraduate level and they are both run at all the eight learning centres and they constitute two-thirds of the Institute's entire student population.
He also disclosed that the vision of the University in the long term was to run majority of the University's programmes via the distance learning mode so that more people who for one reason or the other cannot join the University's mainstream on-campus, can also study and acquire degrees from the University.
He further said that in this respect the institute introduced three top-up undergraduate programmes in Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications Engineering during the 2009/2010 academic year. He revealed that at the start of the current academic year, a new programme - Doctor of Optometry has been introduced. The programme has opened an opportunity for holders of the BSc Optometry degree to do a one year comprehensive top-up to obtain a Doctor of Optometry degree. According to the Vice-Chancellor, the Institute is collaborating with some Departments to bring on board additional top-up programmmes in the coming years and in this direction, four new undergraduate programmes are expected to be introduced in the next academic year.
Also present at the ceremony were the Registrar, Mr. Kobby Yebo-Okrah, the Dean of the Institute of Distance Learning, Prof. I.K. Dontwi, and a host of Lecturers from the Institute.
