The third edition of a collaborative Summer School between the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN) USA has been launched at the newly refurbished Technology Consultancy Centre (TCC).
The Summer School is under the auspices of TCC and it is aimed at bringing together students from different backgrounds to share common ideas towards development.
According to Mr. Donald Amrago, Coordinator of the school, the one month training and interactive programme would present participants the opportunity to learn and appreciate African values and cultures and for the indigenes to also appreciate American cultures. He said the organisation of such programmes would show the world that there could be cultural and social collaborations as demonstrated by KNUST and UPENN over the last three years. He noted that the previous schools were all effective and hoped this year’s would be an improvement on the previous.
Dr. G.Y. Obeng, Director of TCC revealed that participants would be exposed to typical service/working conditions that exist in Africa and for that matter Ghana. He said this is the designed service learning and community impact approach of the Summer School. He said students would learn, share knowledge and culture in different areas including health care, education, micro finance, agriculture, traditional culture and visits to some tourist sites in the country.
Part of the collaboration between the two Institutions is an exchange programme which affords KNUST students to study at UPENN and vice-versa.
In all, there are about 21 participants of whom 7 are indigenes and the other students from UPENN, USA.
