Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ghana Institute of Engineers (GhIE) at the Council Chamber, KNUST.
The purpose of the MoU is to outline areas where the two institutions could collaborate and cooperate to enrich engineering education and practice in Ghana. The two institutions have agreed to work together to improve the image of engineers, to promote interest in Science, Technology and Mathematics in Ghana and to support each other in projects that would make the engineering profession and KNUST as an institution training engineers to become more visible to ordinary people in Ghana.
The two institutions have also agreed to work together to mount continuous professional educational programmes for practising engineers. The GhIE has agreed to continue to assist KNUST improve upon the quality of engineering education by facilitating industrial training for Engineering students as well as encourage its members with the appropriate qualification to consider submitting themselves for appointment as adjunct scholars at KNUST.
Professor W.O. Ellis, the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST said the MoU had become necessary because the two institutions had decided to formalise the relationship that had existed between them for the past years. He said the MoU would help the two institutions know how to relate with each other. The VC advised the Engineers to let their physical presence be seen on KNUST campus and charged the College of Engineering to set up a committee that would review the relationship between the College and GhIE annually. He expressed his gratitude to the GhIE and stated that KNUST was happy to partner them.
Ing. Prof. Samuel Innocent Ampadu, the President of the GhIE said KNUST and GhIE have collaborated on many projects over the years and the MoU was a way of formalising the relationship. He said GhIE was happy to work and support the College of Engineering of KNUST and would ensure that the quality of Engineers produced by KNUST met the standard of GhIE.
The MoU would be in force for an initial period of five years and that it would be reviewed periodically by mutual consent.
