The Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has launched its first-ever Fruits and Fitness Day (FFD), a new wellness initiative aimed at enhancing the well-being of staff across its national network.
The maiden edition of FFD saw staff from all IDL centres; including Kumasi, Accra, Takoradi, and Tamale, suit up in sporty attire for a day filled with engaging physical activity and healthy indulgence.
Activities ranged from health walks and aerobic sessions to fun games and social interaction, capped off by the sharing and enjoyment of a wide array of fresh fruits.
Speaking at the event, Director of IDL, Professor Anthony Andrews, emphasized the significance of the initiative, which he revealed will be held every month.
“Let’s stay fit, healthy, and productive together,” he encouraged, noting that the FFD is designed not only to promote physical wellness but also to nurture a more positive and connected work environment.
In Kumasi, Dr. Charles Apprey, from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, and the Institute’s Assistant Examinations Officer, led a short educational session on nutrition, highlighting the benefits of fruits in maintaining good digestive health.
“Fruits are packed with fibre, which aids digestion and helps your body absorb key nutrients,” he explained. He also cautioned against relying solely on fruit juices, especially when sieved, as they often lack the full fibre content of whole fruits.
Institute Registrar, Mr. Owusu-Ansah Debrah, reiterated management’s commitment to making FFD a regular fixture across all IDL centres.
“This initiative is more than just a break from routine, it’s a lifestyle shift we want every staff member to embrace,” he said.
The launch of Fruits and Fitness Day marks a fresh chapter in IDL’s efforts to foster holistic staff development, blending work with wellness in a fun, inclusive, and sustainable way.
