The family of the late Dr. Ben Adu Amankwah has presented books and other learning materials belonging to the man to the Department of Chemical Engineering.
Presenting the books on behalf of the family, the Past Bishop of the Kumasi Diocese of the Methodist Church, Rt. Rev. N. B. Abubakr said it was in Dr. Adu Amankwah’s will that all his books and teaching materials be bequeathed to the Department of Chemical Engineering. He stated that the donation was in honour of the man who once served as the Dean for the Faculty of Chemical and Material Engineering.
The Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Mrs. Momade received the books on behalf of the Department and the Provost of the College of Engineering. She thanked the members of the Adu Amankwah family and assured them that the Department was going to put the books into good use.
Ing. Dr. Ben Adu Amankwa was born at Dadease near Kokofu in the Ashanti Region on October 21, 1940. He started his primary education at Dadease, Kokofu and attended the SDA Teachers Training College and later obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in KNUST in 1969.
Ing. Dr. Adu Amankwah participated in the AFGRAD Scholars program and obtained a Diploma in Management from the Arthur D. Little Institute in Cambridge Massachusetts and later obtained a Master of Science (Chem. Eng) from Ohio State University.
He returned to KNUST as a lecturer in 1973 and left in 1979 to Rutgers University in New Jersey,USA. He graduated from Rutgers at the top of his class with M.Phil in 1979 and completed a Ph.D (Chem.Eng) in 1980. Upon completion of his studies he again returned to KNUST as a lecturer in the Department from 1983 to 1985.
He also worked at the National Investment Bank in 1985, headed the Division of Small and Medium Enterprises and served on many boards and committees.
He returned to the Department of Chemical Engineering at KNUST and was instrumental in the setting up of the establishment of the Petroleum Engineering programme. He died at the age of seventy (70) in April, 2011.
