CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

Prof Otoo Ellis, Vice Chancellor (KNUST): "Universities are established to solve problems of society and therefore as we train the critical manpower of our nations especially developing countries, we need to train them with the mind set to be able to identify problems and work together as a team "

Malcolm Gillis, President of Rice University notes that: Today, more than ever before in human history, the wealth-or poverty-of nations depends on the quality of higher education. Those with a larger repertoire of skills and a greater capacity for learning can look forward to lifetimes of unprecedented economic fulfilment. But in the coming decades the poorly educated face little better than the dreary prospects of lives of quiet desperation. In the circles of tertiary education, quality cannot be avoided and what institutions do to ascertain quality is most important and effective. Developing countries face a challenge of pedagogies that do not adequately create and use knowledge meet the needs of enterprises, communities and society in general. Therefore developing countries are at risk of being further marginalized in today's highly competitive world economy. The conference seeks to guide its audiences through a learning process that is increasingly based on the capacity to find and access knowledge and apply in solving real-life problem. Learning to learn, learning to transform information into new knowledge, and learning to translate new knowledge into applications become more important than memorizing specific information.
