Call for Applications for the Recruitment of a Laboratory Instrumentation Manager for RWESCK

Preamble

RWESCK is looking for a talented, highly motivated individual to operate, calibrate and maintain state-of-the-art equipment like the AAS, GC, XRD, SEM, PCR among other equipment for the analysis of water quality, wastewater characteristics, solid waste characteristics, composite membrane, characterization of nanoparticle composite membrane materials (zeolite and polymeric), characterization of adsorptive filter materials (including various coated sand media, synthetic zeolites, activated carbon, coated activated carbon for wastewater and water treatment and pollutants remediation, as well as biochar materials, organic fertilizers and sanitation technology development.

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for instruments operation, daily instrumentation audits, calibration, preventative/predictive maintenance and troubleshooting of all laboratory instruments. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform and execute laboratory techniques as per methods independently, following the Instruments Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to carry out samples analyses
  • Provide support to postgraduate students’ research and training for laboratory instrumentation technicians,
  • Maintain, test and repair a variety of instrumentation and test equipment by developing and maintaining instrument daily logs, individual instrument calibration logs, maintenance logs, analytical method performance metrics, and equipment record books
  • Maintain and operates equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns and performing preventive maintenance,
  • Recording and periodically interpreting results to present to senior colleagues in a timely manner
  • Keep laboratory supplies readily available by inventorying stock
  • Assists with preparing SOP’s, validation protocol and reporting
  • Demonstrates safe work habits and enforces a clean and safety environment
  • Assists the Centre’s Laboratory Supervisor in monitoring of equipment

Job Qualifications

The Centre is looking for an effective, results-driven, take initiative, self-directed and motivated team player who communicates in an open, honest and respectful manner. In addition, qualified candidates should possess the following:

  • MSc degree in Laboratory Instrumentation and Analytical Chemistry or a relevant degree equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a laboratory environment working with and maintaining AAS, GC, XRD, SEM, PCR equipment, etc,
  • Excellent publication skills and research competence, with evidence of at least one (1) scientific publications in high impact journals,
  • Advanced knowledge of multiple analytical techniques including, but not limited to: AAS, XRD, SEM, gas chromatography, PCR, ion chromatography, HPLC, FT-NIR, bomb calorimetry, TOC, TSS, automated titration, moisture balance and densitometry.
  • Experienced in microbiologic techniques as they apply to enzyme based laboratory and manufacturing processes
  • Keen focus on laboratory safety
  • Good record-keeping skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter with systematic decision making, problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong team player with an ability to work closely with all functional teams
  • Superior problem solving and instrument / sample troubleshooting skills
  • Candidates must be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Good handling samples & lab equipment
  • Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health & Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies

Remuneration

An appropriate remuneration will be paid for the position taking into consideration the challenging project tasks to be undertaken.
