A team of final-year BSc Mechanical Engineering students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST) has developed a bamboo splitting machine designed to reduce the labour and time required to process bamboo for industrial and artisanal use.
The locally designed machine automates one of the most demanding stages of bamboo processing by producing uniform strips for downstream applications such as furniture, handicrafts and decorative artefacts.
"Our bamboo splitting machine can split bamboo into strips, equal strips. It can split it into four, it can split it into six, it can split it into eight," one of the students said during a presentation of the project.
The machine features an adjustable blade system that enables users to vary the number of strips produced from a single bamboo culm to suit different production requirements.
"We have an adjustable blade which you can change depending on the number of splits you have," the student explained.
The students said the innovation was inspired by the challenges associated with manually splitting bamboo, a process they described as labour-intensive and time-consuming.

"We realised manual splitting of bamboo was so labour intensive and time consuming. We know that manual splitting is part of the processing of bamboo," the student said.
The team noted that bamboo strips are essential raw materials for producing furniture, artefacts and other value-added products, making efficient processing critical to the industry's growth.
"Whenever you have split bamboo, you can use it for furniture, artefacts and that is why we considered splitting bamboo. Ours is to make it efficient for it to be able to split within a given time," the student added.
