A distinguished alumnus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Professor Eric Kwasi Ofori, has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Garden City University.
Professor Ofori, a renowned scholar in medical imaging and higher education administration, earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in Agricultural Engineering from KNUST in 1993 before pursuing advanced studies abroad.
Born on March 6, 1966, in Kyebi in Ghana’s Eastern Region, he attended Kyebi Methodist Primary School and Kyebi Experimental Junior High School before proceeding to Suhum Secondary Technical School, now Suhum Senior High School, where he obtained his GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level certificates.
Following his studies at KNUST, he obtained an MPhil in Radiography from City University London and a PhD in Health Sciences (Radiography) from the University of Liverpool in 2009. He also holds a Certificate in Agricultural Engineering from the Tsukuba International Centre in Japan.
Professor Ofori has built an extensive academic and professional career across several Ghanaian universities, including the University of Ghana, University of Health and Allied Sciences and University of Cape Coast.
In January 2017, he was appointed Associate Professor of Medical Imaging at the School of Allied Health Sciences at UHAS and was promoted to full professor in April 2021. Prior to joining UHAS, he served as lecturer and senior lecturer at the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences at the University of Ghana from 2010 to 2016.
He later served as a visiting professor at the Department of Imaging Technology and Sonography at the University of Cape Coast in 2023.
Throughout his academic career, Professor Ofori has held several leadership positions, including Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences at UHAS for six years and Head of the Imaging Technology and Sonography Department at UCC. He also acted on several occasions as Pro-Vice Chancellor at UHAS.
With more than two decades of teaching and research experience, he has supervised 10 PhD students, 15 MPhil students and more than 60 undergraduate dissertations.
His research interests include quality assurance and radiation protection in diagnostic imaging, medical imaging instrumentation, radiography education and women’s health. He has published more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed medical imaging journals and presented at several local and international conferences.
Professor Ofori has also contributed significantly to higher education governance and professional advocacy in Ghana. He served as National Vice-President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana and local Vice-President of the association at the University of Ghana between 2015 and 2017.
He currently serves as an external assessor for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and as a member of the Appointments and Promotions Board of Ho Technical University.
Professor Ofori is a registered member of the Allied Health Professions Council and the Ghana Society of Radiographers.
He is also affiliated with the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists and the Pan-African Congress of Radiology and Imaging.
