Call for Applications for Appointments as Volta River Authority (VRA) Research Chairs

College of Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the positions of:

  1. VRA Research Chair for Water Resources and Hydraulic Structures
  2. VRA Research Chair for Power Generation, Distribution and Transmission
  3. VRA Research Chair for Renewable Energy

These positions are funded by the Volta River Authority (VRA) and are tenable in the College of Engineering, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The Chairs for (1) Water Resources and Hydraulic Structures, (2) Power Generation, Distribution and Transmission and (3) Renewable Energy are research chairs established by the Volta River Authority to assist the College of Engineering, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.

Eligibility

The Positions are open to candidates from Ghana and abroad to include Ghanaians in the diaspora. The occupant must:

  • be a scholar of Professorial status and of international repute in Engineering;
  • hold a doctorate degree in Engineering from a recognised University with proven experience in teaching and research in Engineering;
  • promote the discipline of Engineering through teaching, research and advocacy.

Qualification

  1. VRA Research Chair for Water Resources and Hydraulic Structures
  • Ph.D.  in Water Resources, Hydropower Engineering and Hydraulic Structures with extensive research and publications in the area.
  1. VRA Research Chair for Power Generation, Distribution and Transmission
  • Ph.D. in Power Generation, Transmission, Distribution and Electric Machines Engineering with Extensive research and publications in the area.
  1. VRA Research Chair for Renewable Energy
  • Ph.D. in Engineering with extensive research and publications in Renewable Energy.

Responsibilities

  1. VRA Research Chair for Water Resources and Hydraulic Structures
  • Study VRA's Strategic Plan, its power generation and distribution operations, its aspirations in the regional power market, and on the basis, formulate a research agenda in the area of Water Resources and Hydraulic Structures.
  • Establish technical partnerships with leading universities and industry leaders within and beyond the African continent in support of activity no. 1.
  • Collaborate with industry to establish a state-of-the-art research laboratory in Hydropower Engineering in KNUST with a focus on Water Resources and Hydraulic structures.
  • Establish teaching and learning exchange programmes with partner universities and institutions in the area of Hydropower.
  • Establish/strengthen a research group with focus on Water Resources and Hydropower including mini hydro and Hydraulic Structures to provide innovative solutions to industrial problems including the alkali-silica reaction problem of concrete at the College of Engineering.
  • Engage industry in the training of the next generation of Civil Engineering Professionals with specialized skills in Water Resources and Hydropower.
  • Leverage this funding to seek further funding from industry to support faculty development and refresher training of Faculty members.
  • Organize or facilitate the organization of conferences and workshops to discuss contemporary research and technological development in Water Resources and Hydraulic Structures.
  1. VRA Research Chair for Power Generation, Distribution and Transmission
  • Study VRA's Strategic Plan, its power generation and distribution operations, its aspirations in the regional power market, and on the basis of these, formulate research agenda in the area of Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution.
  • Establish technical partnerships with leading universities and industry leaders within and beyond the African continent in support of activity no. 1.
  • Collaborate with industry in the training of the next generation of Power and Energy Engineering Professionals.
  • Establish teaching and learning exchange programmes with partner universities and institutions.
  • Engage industry to establish a state-of-the-art research laboratory on Power Generation, Transmission, and Distribution.
  • Establish/strengthen a research field group in the of Power and Energy Technology at the College of Engineering to provide innovative solutions to the electricity generation (Hydropower, Thermal, and Renewables) challenge.
  • Leverage this funding to seek further funding from industry to support faculty development and refresher training of faculty members.
  • Organise or facilitate the organisation of conferences and workshops to discuss contemporary research and technological development in Power and Energy Engineering.
  1. VRA Research Chair for Renewable Energy
  • VRA's Strategic Plan, its power generation and distribution operations, its aspirations in the regional power market, and on the basis of these, formulate research agenda in the area of Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution.
  • Establish technical partnerships with leading universities and industry leaders within and beyond the African continent in support of activity no. 1.
  • Establish teaching and learning exchange programmes with partner universities and institutions.
  • Collaborate with industry to establish a state-of-the-art research laboratory with a focus on Off- Grid and Grid-tied Solar PV Electricity generations.
  • Establish/strengthen a research group in the fields of Renewable Energy Technology at the College of Engineering to provide innovative solutions to electricity generation (Hydropower and Renewables).
  • Engage industry in the training of the next generation of Sustainable Energy Engineering (renewables and energy efficiency) professionals.
  • Seek further funding from the industry to support faculty development and refresher training of faculty members.
  • Organise or facilitate the organisation of conferences and workshops to discuss contemporary research and technological development in Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, and Climate Change.

Conditions of Service

  • The position is full-time for a fixed term of 24 months.
  • Very attractive conditions of service, including salary, allowances and other fringe benefits.

Duration

Two (2)-year renewable for an additional year.
