The financial support came with a short message: “You are not alone. Keep walking.” For one Unity Hall student, those words offered reassurance at a time when meeting basic needs and preparing for examinations had become difficult.
“Your support has therefore meant much more to me than just the financial value of the stipend; it has given me some relief, encouragement, and the confidence to keep pushing forward,” the student wrote in an appreciation letter.

That combination of practical assistance and encouragement is at the heart of the Conti Alumni Exams Stipend, an initiative supporting financially needy Unity Hall residents at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST).
Through the initiative, alumni provide stipends during examination periods to help ease financial pressures that can compete with students’ attention to their studies.
For the alumni behind the programme, those pressures are familiar. In their message to beneficiaries, they recall moments from their own student years when securing the next meal was uncertain and financial hardship added to the demands of academic life.
“Sitting for examinations while carrying the weight of hunger, uncertainty, and financial hardship could adversely affect one’s concentration and grades,” the message reads.
Their response draws on memories of the support they once found within the hall. They recall Always Around, the TV Room, Conti Trips, the JCR and friendships with students on their floors and in neighbouring rooms as parts of a social safety net.
“Conversations relieved our burdens; shared kindness inspired smiles, and those moments became integral to the stories that shaped our journeys through Unity Hall and beyond,” the alumni wrote.
The stipend extends that support to another generation of residents. The accompanying message addresses each recipient as “Brother” and closes with an assurance: “YOUR BIG BROTHERS ARE WITH YOU.”
“Today, we offer a bit of ourselves in these modest tokens, praying that they lighten your burden, stir hope, lift your spirit, and motivate you to excel in your examinations,” it states.
Appreciation letters from beneficiaries describe both the financial relief and the significance of receiving help from former residents.
One student wrote that balancing academic responsibilities with financial difficulties could be overwhelming, particularly during examinations. The message accompanying the stipend, the student added, reinforced a sense of belonging.
“Those words reminded me that there are people who genuinely care about the well-being and success of students in Unity Hall. It is comforting to know that the sense of brotherhood and support that makes the hall special continues to live on.”
Another beneficiary thanked the alumni for assistance that arrived when it was needed and acknowledged the organisers of an interview for their efforts to ensure students requiring support were considered.
A third described how the assistance had eased financial difficulties and renewed the motivation to study.
“Your kindness has helped ease some of the financial challenges I face and has given me greater motivation to continue working hard toward achieving my goals,” the student wrote.
The initiative has also received recognition from the KNUST branch of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).
A Social Impact Award citation issued by the 44th NUGS-KNUST administration for the 2025/2026 academic year honours the alumni association for supporting the welfare and academic success of Unity Hall residents.
The citation commends the provision of stipends during examination periods and the association’s commitment to helping prevent financial difficulties from obstructing academic achievement.
“This noble act reflects the true spirit of service and the enduring bond between alumni and their alma mater,” it states.
The letters offer a personal account of that continuing bond. Beneficiaries describe former residents reaching back to support students facing difficulties they themselves remember, with encouragement to persevere alongside the financial assistance.
For one recipient, the experience also prompted a hope of eventually supporting someone else.
“I sincerely appreciate you, and I hope that one day I will also be in a position to extend the same kindness to someone who needs it.”
