Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, Provost of the College of Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST), has been appointed Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University.
The appointment, made by the University Council in accordance with Statute 13 of the University, takes effect from October 1, 2026, following the end of the term of office of Prof. David Asamoah as Pro Vice-Chancellor on September 30, 2026.
Prof. Nyarko will perform the functions of the Pro Vice-Chancellor under Statute 13, as well as other assignments delegated to him by the Vice-Chancellor, until a substantive Pro Vice-Chancellor is appointed.
A Professor of Civil Engineering, Prof. Nyarko has over 30 years of experience in teaching, research, professional practice and academic leadership. His expertise spans water, sanitation and hygiene, water systems, sanitation technologies, and sustainable and climate-resilient water and sanitation services.
He has supervised over 300 theses and authored more than 100 publications, with over 2,000 citations. His research work has attracted support from organisations including the European Union, World Bank, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Conrad Hilton Foundation.
Prof. Nyarko has led major research and academic initiatives, including the KNUST component of the USAID-funded Rural Evidence and Learning for Water (REAL-Water) project, which generated evidence to support the expansion of safe and sustainable rural water services.
He also served as Project Lead for the KNUST Engineering Education Project (KEEP), a World Bank-supported African Centres of Excellence initiative focused on strengthening postgraduate engineering education and research.
Prof. Nyarko is a Fellow of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, serves on the Board of the Engineering Council of Ghana and is a Council Member of the Ghana Institution of Engineers.
