The Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (GRASAG-KNUST) has handed over GH₵3.7 million to the University Council as seed funding for the construction of a postgraduate students’ hostel.

The money, accumulated over the years through contributions from postgraduate students towards the proposed hostel, was presented to the University Council on September 18, 2026.

The project had yet to take off despite continuing accommodation challenges facing postgraduate students at KNUST.

The 2025/2026 GRASAG-KNUST administration, led by its President, Mr. Yussif Suleman, therefore handed over the accumulated funds to the University Council to facilitate the commencement of the project.

Chairman of the University Council, Akyamfour Asafo Boakye Agyemang-Bonsu, received the funds on behalf of the Council.

Mr. Suleman said the decision was intended to ensure that years of contributions by postgraduate students were translated into a tangible project that would benefit current and future students.

“For years, our members have contributed faithfully towards a postgraduate hostel that never materialised. Today, we are not just returning that money, we are returning it with purpose,” he said.

“This donation is our promise to every postgraduate student, present and future, that their comfort and their research matter. We are laying a foundation we may not personally benefit from, and that is exactly what true leadership looks like. As we journey from excellence to eminence, we leave behind not just words, but a legacy of action.”

The Association said the proposed hostel would help ease accommodation pressures on postgraduate students and provide a more conducive environment for academic work and research.

The contribution forms part of efforts by the 2025/2026 GRASAG-KNUST administration to address longstanding concerns affecting postgraduate students and support the development of dedicated accommodation for the postgraduate community.
