The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, in collaboration with the National Insurance Commission (NIC), has organized a symposium under the theme “Bridging the Gap: Regulatory Expectations and Career Readiness in the Insurance Industry.”
The event brought together leading insurance experts, academics, and students to discuss the evolving landscape of the insurance sector, aligning academic training with industry demands, tackling regulatory challenges, and equipping the next generation of professionals with the skills required to thrive in Ghana’s insurance market.

Mr. Richard Okyere, Director of Ghana Insurance Company, emphasized the importance of statistics and actuarial science in the industry and encouraged students to pursue professional certifications to enhance their career prospects.
He also advised them to remain ethical and continuously learn from others.

The Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, highlighted the significance of insurance and the NIC’s role in regulating the sector.
She announced plans to establish a research hub at KNUST to address industry concerns through academic research.
"When we have insurance concerns, we can bring them to the hub, where researchers interested in the field can analyze the issues and develop solutions," she stated.
As part of efforts to promote innovative thinking and problem-solving, Dr. Zakariah also revealed that the NIC would be launching an awards scheme to invite students and industry professionals to propose innovative solutions for challenges in the insurance sector.
"We are launching an awards scheme that invites people like you, not just insurance planners to share possible solutions with us," she added.
