Parliament has passed a new bill to repeal and replace the existing legal framework governing the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi ushering in key governance reforms aimed at modernising the University’s administrative and leadership structures.
A central provision of the new bill is the introduction of two Pro Vice-Chancellors, a move expected to strengthen academic leadership, improve institutional coordination, and support the University’s expanding teaching, research, and innovation mandate.
The bill also revises the composition of the University Council, broadening participation in governance. Representation previously assigned to the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) has been replaced with representation for Junior Staff, while Non-Teaching Staff will now have formal representation on the Council.
In addition, the legislation updates administrative tenure provisions. The Registrar of the University will now serve a four-year term, renewable once for a further four years.
The same tenure arrangement has been applied to the University’s chief financial officer, whose designation has been updated from Finance Officer to Director of Finance.
