In alignment with the Vice Chancellor’s vision to promote Technology-Mediated Learning and foster innovative projects within the University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi with support from South Dakota State University, has successfully set up Virtual Reality (VR) Studios at the KNUST E-Learning Centre. The VR Studios were commissioned on 30th April 2024, at the Evans Anfom Building.
VR utilises realistic scenarios and simulations to promote creativity and problem-solving abilities, aiding in preparing students for the ever-changing digital environment they will encounter in their careers. The KNUST VR Studios are fitted with eleven (11) high-tech virtual reality devices for immersive learning and exploration.

The Director of the KNUST E-Learning Centre, Professor Eric Appau Asante, emphasised that the studios would serve as transformative spaces empowering faculty members to explore new pedagogical approaches, engage students in immersive learning, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration across academic disciplines in the University. Further, the studios would offer opportunities for the University Community to leverage cutting-edge technologies in research and creative endeavours.
Professor Appau Asante stated that the studios are equipped to also cater for the needs of all the university colleges affiliated with KNUST and encouraged all faculty members and students to embrace this technology and make the most of the resources installed. ‘The possibilities are limitless, whether simulating scientific experiments or embarking on virtual field expeditions, he added.’

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, applauded South Dakota University for their support and stressed the University's commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology to enhance teaching and learning. She also affirmed the University's dedication to advancing the initiative, enhancing teaching practicality and enjoyment through simulations, and making education more engaging and tangible. She called on all to support the noble cause, observing that the initial installation of the eleven devices is just the beginning, with plans to scale up in future expansion works.

Joining virtually, Professor Greg Heiberger, Associate Dean for Academics and Student Success (College of Natural Sciences) at South Dakota State University congratulated KNUST on its remarkable strides in advancing e-learning initiatives, noting the significance of their efforts. He affirmed the longstanding partnership between South Dakota State University and KNUST and highlighted their commitment to nurturing mutual relationships and ongoing exchange programmes benefiting both students and faculty.
