The Sports Directorate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has launched its first-ever Freshmen Games, a competition designed to unearth and showcase the sporting talents of the university's first-year students.
Spanning multiple sporting disciplines, the initiative aims to foster student engagement while strengthening KNUST’s competitive sports teams.
The week-long event features a variety of competitions, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, handball, and table tennis, among others, for both male and female participants.
Freshmen from various colleges across the university have formed teams, promoting a spirit of healthy competition and school pride.
Professor Emmanuel Adinyera, Chairman of the KNUST Sports Committee, highlighted the strategic significance of the Freshmen Games.
"This serves as a preparation for the main College Games, which will take place next semester. It is a stepping stone towards the Inter-Colleges Games," he stated.
He also underscored the event’s role in talent identification.
"The Freshmen Games provide a platform for first-year students to showcase their sporting abilities while giving our coaches an opportunity to scout potential talents for the university’s teams," Professor Adinyera explained.
The competition will run throughout the week, culminating in the crowning of champions in each sporting discipline. The event is expected to become a permanent fixture on the KNUST sporting calendar.
