In a significant step towards improving campus transportation and ensuring the safety of students, the Transport Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, in collaboration with the Directorate of Student Affairs (DoSA), organised a comprehensive training on Defensive Driving and Customer Service for KNUST Shuttle Drivers and other Private Shuttle Operators.
The training workshop held on 4th June 2024, focused on Road Safety and Defensive Driving, Customer Service Management, Work Ethics for Drivers and Emotional Intelligence. This initiative forms part of the Department’s proactive approach to enhancing campus transportation services, prioritising safety, and providing professional development for drivers.

Professor Wilson Agyei Agyare, the Director of the Directorate of Student Affairs, KNUST, speaking on the purpose of the training session, highlighted the importance of enhancing the skills and knowledge of Shuttle Drivers on defensive driving and customer care to better serve the student population. “As a student-centric institution, KNUST aims to foster a safer and more efficient transportation system while strengthening the relationship between students and drivers,” he said. Professor Agyei Agyare commended the drivers for their hard work and dedication and urged them to maintain their high standards of service.

Presenting on Road Safety and Defensive Driving, Dr. Joshua Ampofo, the Transport Engineer at KNUST Transport Department, spoke extensively on road safety and defensive driving. He emphasised the University's commitment to preventing accidents and protecting its students. Dr. Ampofo outlined essential safety measures, including regular checks of vehicle safety systems, proper mirror alignment, and strict adherence to traffic regulations. He urged drivers to remain vigilant and alert while on the road to ensure the well-being of their passengers.

The training workshop also featured insights from Dr. Martin Owusu Ansah, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Marketing and Corporate Strategy at the KNUST School of Business (KSB), who addressed the topic of Customer Service Management. He likened the drivers' roles to those of marketers, with students being their valued customers. He stressed on the importance of identifying and meeting student needs to foster positive relationships and maintain professional standards.
Ms. Joan Soribang, Assistant Clinical Psychologist at the KNUST Counselling Centre (KCC) provided training on Emotional Intelligence, underscoring its significance in managing interactions with students.
Dr. Faisal Wahab Adam also delivered a session on Ethics in Driving, highlighting the moral responsibilities of drivers in ensuring safety and respect on the road.
The workshop was structured with a question-and-answer session, allowing drivers to clarify doubts and gain a deeper understanding of the topics discussed.
