As part of its social responsibility activities, the KNUST Finance Office (F.O.) Welfare has donated a cash amount of GH¢500 and some assorted items, including fruits, food stuffs and toiletries to King Jesus Charity Home in Buadi, a suburb of Kumasi.
In a formal presentation, the Chairman of the F.O. Welfare, Mr. Johnson Owusu, expressed optimism that the donation would challenge some key organisations, departments and stakeholders, especially those in the University Community to emulate the gesture in future. He assured that, although it was the first time the F.O. Welfare was making a donation to the home, that would not be the last.
Mr. Owusu used the occasion to motivate the occupants (inmates) of the Home to make hay while sun shines in order to excel in their various endeavours, particularly in pursuing their educational fortunes. He admonished staff of the home to live above reproach and beyond the call of duty, and that they should consider their services as a duty to the nation, and humanity at large.
The Chaplain of the Home, Rev. Anthony Kwevi, who gave a brief history of the institution disclosed that the founder, Rev. Kofi Owusu Afriyie, established the home in 1995 with the main objective of providing free education for the less-privileged, street children and orphans in the society. He commended the media for their unflinching support, including some individuals and organizations whose contributions have been of immense help to the home.
The donation was received by Mrs. Comfort Owusu Afriyie on behalf of her husband, Rev. Owusu Afriyie. She expressed profound appreciation to the F.O. Welfare for the kind gesture which had brought smiles to many faces in the Home.
Mrs. Owusu Afriyie disclosed that the total population of occupants in the Home was estimated at 187. Meanwhile, six (6) had completed tertiary education, nineteen (19) were enrolled in some Senior High Schools, and many more were at the elementary level.
