A special committee of the University Council has been duly inaugurated by the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene and Chancellor, to review the University Act and Statutes to reflect the ever changing trends in 21st century higher education.
In an introduction, the Registrar, Mr. Yebo-Okrah described the ceremony as short but solemn ones whereby the time had arrived for the Act and Statutes of the University needed to be reviewed. He suggested the timely reviewing of the Act and Statutes was necessary and as such a committee was needed to effect the changes required.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. W.O. Ellis deemed it a special honour to be present at such a memorable occasion. He gave a brief history of the Act and Statutes of the University and stated clearly that the review was essential to ensuring the smooth running of the University.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said that for almost sixty (60) years after the establishment of the University ACT 1961, ACT 80 it has not seen any appreciable transformational and far-reaching amendments to reflect the changing dynamics of 21st Century Higher Education and the country's socio-economic development and advancement. He further stated that since the institution of the University Statutes in 2004 it has been found to contain various schedules which hinder and militate against effective administration and management of Faculties, Colleges and the University as a whole thus the need for reviewing.
The Chancellor mentioned appointment and renewal procedures for Provosts; Roles, functions and Lines of Authority under the Collegiate System; Status of Faculties, Deans and Vice-Deans; University Financial and Stores Regulations and the Financial Administration Laws of Ghana as some of the critical areas in the Statutes which would be reviewed. He revealed that the reviewing would effect changes which would reflect the current dynamism of the global village where the University would be offered greater opportunities to advance the cause of Science and Technology after fifty (50) years of its existence.
Representing the selected committee members, Paapa Dadson acknowledged Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for duly inaugurating the special committee. He pledged on behalf of his colleagues to work above reproach.
