The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi and Fondazione Edu have commemorated a decade-long partnership that has provided full scholarships to 170 brilliant but financially challenged KNUST students since its inception in the 2015/2016 academic year.
The Fondazione Edu Scholarship, an Italian foundation focused on education and development, seeks to bridge the gap for undergraduates who face financial challenges, enabling them to pursue university education without the burden of basic academic needs.
Over the past decade, the scholarship has become a lifeline for many students whose potential and dreams might otherwise have gone unrealized.

Director of Student Affairs, Professor Marian Asantewah Nkansah, said the programme’s consistent growth reflects the Foundation’s enduring impact.
“From an initial 15 students in the 2015/2016 academic year to 73 students in 2024/2025, the expansion of the scholarship is a clear indication of the Foundation’s commitment to making higher education more accessible,” she said.
Professor Nkansah expressed optimism that the initiative would continue to remove financial barriers and unlock potential across Ghana.
“We are assured of the goal to expand the scholarship’s reach to include more students. We appreciate the Foundation’s generosity and continued support, and hope that the seeds sown through this scholarship will have a multiplying effect beyond what we see,” she added.

Ms. Chiara Paggio, who read a speech on behalf of the President of the Edu Foundation, Matteo Stefanelli, said, “We are here today to celebrate ten years of something that started with a simple, radical idea: that brilliance should not be wasted because of lack of resources. That talent deserves a chance.”
She continued, “Over these ten years, the scholarship programme has supported more than 500 students, each with a unique story, a unique struggle, and, above all, a unique potential.
“This programme is not perfect. We know that. No programme is. But it is real. It has made a difference. And I want to thank every student here today for your courage, your resilience, and your commitment. As we look to the future, we want to do more, reach more students, build stronger partnerships,” Chiara remarked.

Ms. Valentina Mutti, another representative of the Foundation, praised the resilience and strength of the beneficiaries. “Every time I hear your stories, see your progress, or read your letters, I’m reminded why this work matters. You are the reason this programme exists,” she said.
“You are living proof that when talent is met with support, the results can be extraordinary, not just for the individual, but for the entire society. Let’s keep going. The next ten years are just beginning,” she mentioned.

Mrs. Theodora Oduro, Senior Assistant Registrar at the Student Support and Financial Services Office, DoSA, stated that since its commencement, the Fondazione Edu Scholarship has provided comprehensive support, including tuition, accommodation, upkeep, and books.
She explained that the programme focuses on long-term academic success and stability, ensuring that beneficiaries are not only enrolled but are fully equipped to complete their studies without financial strain.
Active student beneficiaries, including Ali Tuweh and Sarah Boateng, shared their stories of how the scholarship has significantly impacted their academic lives.
“If it had not been for the Fondazione Edu Scholarship, I would still be in my village. I can now boast of a good CWA. Thank you, Fondazione Edu, for your support,” Ali said.
