Gaining admission to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi is often a mix of curiosity and high expectations. Some freshers talk about what their expectations were and what they experienced after their first lecture.
For Ibrahim Kwabena Asante, studying Geomatic Engineering, the expectations before his first lecture were shaped by what he had heard about the programme.
“My expectations for the course were a tedious one because I was told we'll spend more time on the field than in class because tomorrow for instance we'll have practical,” he said.
Despite initial concerns about not yet having all the required equipment for the practical, Ibrahim says his first lecture and meetings at his faculty has helped ease his worries and has provided clarity.
“So far so good. We’ve been briefed all the courses, so I know what to expect now and hopefully I’m able to do it,” he stated.
Sharing her experience, Larbi Oforiwaa Menash, a BSc Civil Engineering student, spoke about how she felt prior to the lecture hoping for a smooth beginning.
“I was nervous and I just hoped today will be great,” she said.
Menash disclosed that the scheduled lecturer was unable to attend the session. Instead, a teaching assistant met the class, introduced the course, organized students into groups, and assigned them their first task.
“The lecturer didn’t come. The TA came to introduce the course to us and grouped us and he gave us an assignment,” she noted.
Although some started out nervous or unsure, but the guidance and experiences so far have helped them feel more confident and prepared. With a better understanding of what lies ahead, the students are now ready to take on the challenges.
