The Scholars Community of Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program (MCFSP) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), as part of their yearly International Day of Service, has commissioned a renovated six (6) unit classroom block furnished with one hundred (100) dual desks for the Salvation Army Primary ‘B’ School in Agona Wiamoase in the Sekyere-South District of the Ashanti Region at the cost of US$25,000.00.
The facility, which was renovated within six weeks and commissioned on 16th July, 2021 marked the Seventh International Day of Service for scholars of the MCFSP at KNUST.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson on behalf of Management of KNUST applauded the scholars for their continuous remarkable contributions to society and encouraged them to do more.
She indicated that the MCFSP at KNUST offers brilliant but economically disadvantaged young Africans access to quality education. The program provides an opportunity for the scholars to receive holistic training that empowers them to become ethical and transformative leaders.
She, thus, encouraged the township to monitor their wards to take their studies seriously and strive for excellence to get access to the scholarship for their tertiary education.
The Lead and Principal Investigator for the Scholars Program at KNUST, Professor Kofi Owusu-Daako announced that MCFSP at KNUST will admit 300 scholars for the 2021/22 Academic Year. He noted that the Scholars Program at KNUST will continue to ensure that brilliant yet financially challenged young Africans especially females, displaced youth and persons with disability are admitted into the Program devoid of any biases.
The President of MCFSP at KNUST Scholars Community, Mr. William Diing Chol Diing, expressed how proud they were to see the change they have made in the lives of pupils of the school. He encouraged his colleagues not to underestimate the impact of giving back to communities no matter how small it may be.
‘Let us never forget to make service our tradition wherever we go, let us adopt the give-back mindset and attitude as our personal philosophies; with our efforts we can create a fair Africa, a fairer Ghana, and support our respective communities development,’ he added.
He hoped that their commitment to the refurbishment will also revitalize the learning souls of the pupils, especially, in the era of Covid-19.
The District Chief Executive for Sekyere South, Honourable Mrs. Reckling Catherine appreciated the scholars for completing the facility to enhance effective teaching and learning.
She promised on behalf of the school to take the necessary security and maintenance measures to ensure the longevity of the building.
In a related development, the Program Manager of MCFSP at KNUST, Ms. Afia Ampomah Awuah on behalf of the scholars presented MCFSP at KNUST branded exercise books and writing materials to the pupils of the Salvation Army Primary ‘B’ School.
The District Director of Education, Mr. George Adu Abrokwa receiving the items thanked the scholars for their kind gesture and promised to put them into good use.
The Scholars’ International Day of Service is a day where Scholars around the globe give-back to the community.
Prior to this commissioning, the scholars have embarked on projects which include donation of food stuffs and sanitary materials to the Kumasi Children’s Home, clean-up exercise at Sabin Akrofrom in the Ashanti Region, offered students of Kumasi High Senior High School practical skills development training to enable students to acquire skills in liquid soap and tie and dye making, embarked on blood donation exercise to donate blood to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, commissioned a mechanized borehole at Asakraka and donated hospital equipment, including a delivery bed, patient’s monitor, hospital ward screens and wheelchairs at the Ejisu Government Hospital.
