Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo). The MoU seeks to enhance the relationship between the University and GRIDCo in order to facilitate internships, job placements and student and staff exchange.
Professor William Otto Ellis, the Vice-Chancellor, expressed his gratitude to GRIDCo for the agreement and the continuous help rendered to the university by the company. He was proud to say that about ninety percent of the staff of GRIDCo are products of KNUST and therefore emphasised the need for GRIDCo to continue to invest in the university. He appealed to them to leave a lasting legacy by mounting a physical monument on campus as seen in many foreign universities as this would signify their presence on campus as a strategic partner of the university.
Professor William Otto Ellis expressed his distress at this year’s admissions where students with excellent grades still could not gain admission into the university due to lack of infrastructure. Thus the construction of a classroom block or a hall of residence will be a good physical monument.
Professor Obiri Danso, Dean of International Programmes (IPO) added that GRIDCo can also provide opportunities for the placement of students in the field for internships They can also expand engineering classroom blocks and get KNUST Engineering staff exposed to practical aspects of engineering. The lecturers from this theoretical and practical experience can train holistic graduates to assist the industry.
In a brief statement, Professor Abeeku Brew Hammond, Director of the Energy Centre acknowledged GRIDCo for the immense contribution of a Ten-Thousand-Ghana Cedi (GH¢10,000) sponsorship package to the Energy Centre to organise seminars.
Charles Darku, the Chief Executive of GRIDCo assured the University of their unflinching support for the College of Engineering. He said the MOU will go a long way to help both parties to support the energy industry in Ghana.
Mr Darku was accompanied by Rev. Samuel F. Kwofie, Director Northern Network Service, GRIDCo; Norbert Anku, Director of Engineering, GRIDCo; Eric Frimpong Koduah, Special Assistant to the Chief Executive; Emily Otu Asare and Bismark Anane, Senior Engineers.
