College of Engineering Research Retreat

Date: 3rd Jul, 2012 - 6th Jul, 2012 Venue: Busua Beach Resort Time: 08:00am

INTRODUCTION

The College of Engineering Research Retreat series is an annual event that provides the opportunity for senior academic members of the college to share their research and development activities and findings with colleagues. The platform also facilitates inter-departmental research group formation and provides the opportunity for industry to share their engineering and technological challenges with members of staff.

The ninth College of Engineering Research Re-treat is scheduled to take place at the Busua Beach Resort from Tuesday 3rd July –Friday 6th July 2012 under the theme “Reliable energy supply, the engine of accelerated economic growth.” Ghana, as a developing country at the Threshold of an economic breakthrough needs to sustainably exploit its natural resources and to add value to its raw materials. These require lots of reliable energy to keep the industries running.Reliable energy availability depends on various disciplines in engineering. Energy availability involves the generation, transmission, distribution, as well as the management of consumption within a properly fashioned energy policy framework. Key to reliable energy is the infrastructure needed to deliver reliable energy.

THEMATIC AREAS

HYDRO SYSTEMS

This theme covers hydropower generation, It includes all aspects of climate change and its impact on rainfall and therefore on hydropower as well as the design, construction and protection dams. It includes the challenges in the management of hydro systems in Ghana.

HYDROCARBON SOURCES

The Ghana oil and gas natural resource endowment and its proper exploitation. It should cover the whole spectrum from the upstream to the downstream ends of the industry as well as the policy and legal environment.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

The contribution and potential of renewable energy such as solar, biomass and wind among others, towards sustaining the required level of energy nationally will be discussed together with their enabling environment.

CONTROL SYSTEMS

Under this subtheme the systems for power measurement, monitoring and control are discussed.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The design and construction of support systems such as housing, transportation, water supply and sanitation systems to support industrial townships expected to emerge from an economic breakthrough .
